Mirth's comment about Edsel's roots being "ancient and fey" has deeper meaning than just old and fated to death. Morgan le Fey, generally acknowledged to be Arthur's fairy sister, has also been, in some legends, been the Lady of the Lake, although never both Arthur's sister and Lady in one version of the legend. Thus Edsel is the spirit of the Lady of the Lake, and is fated to hold the weapon and die for Kevin.
Edsel carried an enchanted bat through chapter 13 in Mage. The bat is actually Excalibur under an extremely powerful cloaking spell put on it by Mirth, and although Edsel seemed oblivious to the fact, this is the connecting parallel between her and the Lady of the Lake. Merlin brings Arthur to the lake, and the Lady of the Lake holds a sword out to him from the middle. Arthur rows his way out, and takes the sword and scabbard from the Lady. The scabbard of Excalibur makes its carrier impervious to magic. Similarly, Edsel fashions a scabbard for the bat to hide its presence from the Umbra Sprite.
